Turin United Church
Surrounded by prime agricultural land, Turin is located two miles north of Highway 401. While the economy is farm based, many people are employed off the farm as well. Located next to the church is Kearney Planters, an established agricultural business.
Mission Statement
To be a place of worship and learning for all ages.
To show God’s love through caring and offering support for the surrounding community.
To show God’s love through caring and offering support for the surrounding community.
Our growing congregation is a caring church with an energetic Sunday School and an active UCW unit. Several young families are active and attending on a regular basis. The average age of our congregation is approximately 50. On an average Sunday, you would find approximately 55 in attendance, 15 of those being children.
While we do not have a pastoral care team, many individual members, as well as UCW members and Sunday School teachers address the needs of others in the congregation as the need arises.
Music is important at Turin and although there is no choir, Sunday School students sing from time to time during the service. There is a newly formed hand chime choir, with members from church as well as community at large, who have played during church services as well.
Our Sunday School is very active with over 30 children and 10 teachers. An average of 15 children gather weekly with their parents for the beginning of church and then are dismissed to their classes part way through the service. There is a weekly nursery to accommodate the youngest members of the congregation.
We have many ambitious men and women, working well together in the upkeep of our church building and grounds. Families share the janitorial as well as grass cutting responsibilities, on a monthly basis. A strong sense of community prevails in Turin, with the church building serving as a community centre for many activities.

Building
Built in 1900, this beautifully maintained brick church stands amongst mature maple trees and graceful evergreens planted in 1991, celebrating the 135th anniversary of the congregation. The 2 acre grassed grounds provides adequate parking for all services and events held at the church.
The sanctuary has seating for approximately 175 people. The adjacent Sunday School hall may be opened in the event of a larger crowd. The Sunday School occupies four rooms, including an upper room and three in the basement.
In the pews, one will find Voices United, Hymns for the Family of God and the Good News Bibles, Today’s English Version. The Sanctuary is equipped with a Rodgers organ, piano, remote sound system, and Powerpoint projector. Also available is a TV/DVD unit, cassette/CD player, black felt board, phone, tables and chairs.
Our building is accessible with a wheelchair ramp and recently we have renovated, creating our fully accessible washroom facilities. Within the sanctuary an area has been established to accommodate a wheel chair. We are currently working towards compliance with accessibility standards. The church furnace was updated in 2008 and the roof was replaced in 2012. Included in the basement is a fully stocked kitchen and reception area.

We are active in many projects in and around the community as the need arises: contributing to the local Food Bank, Soup Kitchen, ministering in music to the men at the Village-On-The-Ridge (local Retirement Home), supporting Kenesserie Camp. Turin is actively involved within the Ridgetown and District Christian Ministerial Association whose projects include: the interdenominational Vacation Bible School, the live Nativity Scene,
initiation of a relationship with International Needs, leading to a mission in Los Algodones, in the Dominican Republic, and a commitment to support and rebuild this community, offering Bibles to interested grade 12 graduates and a monthly church service at the Village-On-The- Ridge. We have participated in the Gosnell Cemetery Decoration Day, Remembrance Day Services, T.R.E.E.S, a Memorial Tree Program.

Sunday School Activities
The Sunday School has supported several different organizations such as:
- 9 bed kits to Sleeping Children Around the World
- an adopted child
- over $2,000 to the Los Algodones/Esperanza Mission in Dominican Republic
- World Vision shoe boxes
The Sunday School has raised funds to meet these needs through soup luncheons, breakfasts, spaghetti luncheons, hosting a Linnea Good concert and dinner and the annual Christmas concert. Many fun activities, such as skating, bowling, swimming, Highgate Fair Parade, Halloween party, annual picnic, ladies night, craft sale all keep the excitement high and build a sense of community.
The children each receive a Bible when they turn 8 and scholarships are offered to attend the local Kenesserie Camp. The children successfully challenged the congregation to donate to the local Food Banks, filling totes on a regular basis. At Christmas several families were supported as totes of gifts were dropped off at the local Salvation Army. All of this is accomplished by the generous support of all members of our Church Family

On a sunny July 11, 2015, three folks from Turin were blessed to be a part of Marsha’s class trip to an ocean side worship and communion service. What a gorgeous day for a hike to a rocky outcrop, overlooking the ocean to gather to praise God and participate in communion. Betty and Fred Stirling, who had been trailering in the eastern provinces this past summer and Beth Gladstone who was attending a conference were glad to see Marsha and share this day with her.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the 2014 successful chicken dinner. My goodness, to serve over 440 meals within 2 hours was phenomenal! We have received many compliments through the servers that it was a delicious meal. It feels so good to drive up to the church and see everything in the best condition possible on the grounds as well as the building.
This is a huge undertaking enveloping the entire church family. So many facets - ticket preparation, selling of tickets, planning the meal, purchasing the food and paper products, not to mention the thorough cleaning of the church building, lawn mowing, sprucing up the gardens, gathering and set up of tables, and that’s all before the meal even begins! The preparation of those delicious desserts, serving the meal, cleanup, removal of garbage, the tallying of tickets and funds….. The list just goes on and on.
Just think of the man/woman/child hours put into this event. It is a fundraiser, yes, but beyond that, look at the community building that is happening across generations. We are so blessed at Turin for such willing helpers who just are there to lend their hand at what they do best. This is what makes the body (Turin) so strong as it continues to thrive.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU
Blessings to you all,
On behalf of the committee, Dawn Teetzel, Brenda Gardiner, Carol Rankin, Joanne Humphrey and Beth Gladstone

The Turin United Church congregation welcomed one and all to their 148th Anniversary service on Sunday May 4, 2014 at 11 a.m. Rev. Bruce Cook lead the service. Guest Soloist, Kate Geluk had everyone spellbound as she sang 'The Lord is my Shepherd' and 'Bless This House.' Beth Gladstone was accompanied by Ross Gladstone and Molly Sayer on the fiddle/guitar and piano respectively. Beth also lead the Chimes in two selections as well as the Choir in one anthem.
Rev. Bruce taught the children about the crest of the United Church of Canada and during his sermon gave a refresher course to the congregation on the early history of Canada; how the United Church of Canada came into being in 1925 and how our congregation went from being known as the Indian Lands Church in 1866 to Turin United Church in 1925.
Over the past two years we have looked at our history from 1813 to 1925. Next year we will look at our history from 1925 to the present and in 2016 a big party will be planned for our 150th Anniversary. Stay tuned for details!
Following the service the Turin UCW served a beautiful lunch and took the opportunity to try out the newly installed dishwasher. (Picture under the UCW News)
We are truly blessed with leadership in the Word and music.
