When a child asks for bread who of us would give that child a stone” Mathew7:9
The Women of Alberta thought it unreasonable that thousands of children in Canada are living in poverty. They set out to do something about it. Thus they chose Dolls as their mascot to encourage concrete action not band-aid solutions to better children’s conditions. The 83 members of the legislature in Alberta got 83 dolls as a reminder for real positive action.
The UCW have taken on this idea as a cause to help children in poverty situations. Many are making and presenting these dolls to politicians, and others of influence in the country which includes EACH OF US to change policies and attitudes. Each Doll is to have a name, heart, and certificate which contains these or similar words:-Affordable Housing-Food Security –Affordable Childcare-A Living Wage
Check the web-site www.endchildpoverty.ca for facts and ideas from promoters Linda and Laurel of London. Remember what we accomplished with the Morogoro Project for our 50th Anniversary Project. Well, what worthwhile difference will the ‘Hope Dolls’ inspire us to attempt by our 55th year? Maybe we will volunteer at a breakfast program, become a Big Sister, lead a youth group, speak or write to your local member of council with your ideas and concerns etc. What a worthwhile challenge to make a difference in someone’s life.

Medical Electives and Overseas Program (MEOP)
The UCW’s Vision, in part, states that “we nurture spirituality by reaching out to all God’s people to promote truth, justice peace and caring and sharing with respect for all.”
To fulfill this vision, we decided in 1979 to financially support medical students, from University of Western Ontario. They can choose the Elective which offers their services, without remuneration, in under-serviced and remote places in the world.
Their experiences while in their summer elective placement increases their medical experiences in situations that they would not likely encounter in their local hospitals. They also gain knowledge of medical facilities conditions and cultural ways and beliefs in different areas of the world. The placement helps to broaden their points of view and understanding as a future medical professional.
As of 2014, London Conference UCW has donated $168,715.10. We also offer a $1000.00 bursary each year to a qualifying student. For more information: www.shlulich,uwo.ca/globalhealth
